A big fan of *White Teeth,* I was disappointed with *On Beauty.* I thought the writing uneven--moments of sheer poetry followed by clunking dialogue, subtle yet profound insight followed by baffling character moves. I was also disappointed with her representation of black women as intellectuals (well, I suppose I would be a little sensitive on that particular issue.) That said, I continue to enjoy Smith's development as a writer and will eagerly read her next offering.
