A great little collection of short stories mostly about women coping with the challenges of loving their children. At least that's how it seemed to me. My impressions (and recollection) have faded a bit since reading it, but what sticks out are how vivid the characters become in so few pages and how well the stories evoke the theme announced by the title. These are sort of unexpectedly uplifting stories. They involve a lot of sadness, confusion, even tragedy, but there's this hope running through them, the love of the characters for each other, that saves them from utter despondency.
