The Island of Dr. Moreau

Absolutely creepy. We are introduced to Dr. Moreau's island by Edward Prendick, who is shipwrecked on the island. The more he learns of Dr. Moreau's disturbing and torturous methods and objectives, the more he (and we) are horrified. But it's far more real to him than us, and the horror of the island eventually numbs him to just how bad it is... but he suffers emotional wounds that remain with him even after his escape back to London.
This quote from Dr. Moreau pretty much sums up his perspective:
"Each time I dip a living creature into the bath of burning pain, I say, ‘This time I will burn out all the animal; this time I will make a rational creature of my own!’ "
Shudder!
