Leisel's mother was a gypsy and was killed by the Germans in WWII. Leisel goes to live with her foster family; a mother who cannot express her love and a father who teaches her to read. Leisel's life is told by death; and it is a sad tale. Marked by the books she steals it is reading that ultimately saves her. Although historical fiction is not normally a big pull for readers; this one has so many more facets to the writing. Readers will learn to love Leisel and follow her through this harrowing tale.
