With the majority of my fantasy reading this year being dominated by the Ice & Fire series I found this book to be a refreshing change of pace. There is just the one kingdom in peril and the story is told from the perspective of just one character; Fritz, the bastard son royalty gifted with supernatural powers. I've got to praise Hobb for being able to so aptly convey the loneliness & struggle of a unwanted child trying to find his place in the world as well as just telling a very good story of adventure & intrigue.
