** spoiler alert ** This was another great book in J.D Robb's In Death series. This one has Eve Dallas going up against a murderer and a low ranked officer who wants to take down the famous detective. Dallas makes her living being a hard ass cop who bends the rules slightly but she does it to help those who can't help themselves. In this book, she is trying to find out why someone killed a homeless person and surgically cut him open and took his heart. As she tries to figure this out, she ruffles the feathers of a useless officer. This officer (Bowers) threatens to take down Dallas, apparently she has a big grudge against Eve though Eve has no idea why. Dallas insists it doesn't matter because she will never have to work with Bowers again. Famous last words right. Another body is found linked with Dallas' case, but of course the officer who handled it was inept and messed up the case and relocated it to inactive. Dallas fights against the system to try to find justice for the dead, and she runs up against the AMA and of course Bowers.

In this book you really get a sense of Dallas and how much she cares about her job. Her job as a detective gives her life meaning and helps her to create her identity. Without the job she thinks that she is nothing but the girl who was abused by her father. Dallas goes to the extreme in this story to find the murderer and to gain back her job.
