The book is about an intelligent young man, Thad Roberts, who became a co-op (like an intern) for Johnson Space Center in Houston. With aspirations of becoming an astronaut and eventually the first man to set foot on Mars, he was overjoyed to have this opportunity. Raised as a Mormon, his family disowned him when he was booted out of the missionary program. He and his girlfriend married young and didn't have much money. Feeling insecure, Thad decided to reinvent himself at NASA and spent time organizing adventure outings among the other co-ops and being daring to impress girls. While at NASA, he had access to labs and became friendly with the scientists there. He eventually conceived a plot to steal some moon rocks. The book goes into how this was carried out with the aid of two other co-ops (one who became his girlfriend). He was eventually caught and served time in jail. The book was entertaining, but I didn't really care for Thad. The author didn't fully explain some things about the heist (such as how they got a 600 lb. safe into a pickup truck). My favorite character was Axel, a Belgian rock collector who alerted the FBI to the impending crime. This will be made into a movie and there is some sense that the author was writing with film in mind (he also wrote Accidental Billionaires about Facebook that became the movie "The Social Network").
