Good Calories, Bad Calories
by Gary Taubes
by Gary Taubes
This book provides an interesting perspective on the "science" of nutrition. While I think that Gary Taubes convincingly argues that low-fat is not necessarily good (specifically if low-fat means high refined carbohydrates) and provides a thought provoking description of the tensions that arrive when public policy tries to simplify complex science, I can't say I agree with his conclusions about the "ideal diet." However, I do think that his fat-cell-centric view of obesity could be really helpful to society's perception of weight gain. If the prevalent meme is that people gain weight because they are lazy or lack willpower, this only makes it more difficult for someone who find himself loosing the battle against weight gain. But if he can externalize the battle (person v. fat-cell) then perhaps the battle can be won.
