I read this book for its significance in the origination of Steampunk as a fantasy genre rather than because it's story line held any particular interest for me. The plot was not terribly clever nor was it an incredible standard by which steampunk may be measured. Instead it was a serviceable story with largely forgettable characters.

The appendix at the end that details the steampunk genre is worth having if you are interested in such things.

However, what I will say is that the editing of this edition is HORRIBLE. One must assume they were in a rush to get this book to the shelves to take advantage of the upswing in steampunk popularity that has occurred since 2008 and neglected the task of ensuring a good product was put into customers' hands.
