Greg As a pretty diehard Conrad fan, I'm curious what kept back the 5th star?
No offense, just genuinely curious.

This was really an estimate based on what I recall from reading it as an undergraduate. I'm re-reading it now. Perhaps my rating will change. :-)

Christy I'm sticking with my four stars. I find it intellectually fascinating and am looking forward to teaching it, but it lacks (for me) the emotional power that a book requires to make it to a five-star rating.

Greg I'd like to hear more about the emotional power you're talking about. I might argue that the missing emotive power is central to the novel's themes.
