I thought this book did a very good job of taking a known event in history and building a story around a lesser known character from that event. Moriarty did a great job of incorporating the changing values over some 90+ yrs. of the characters life . . and at the same time finding comparisons with events in this century. She was able to create a character that you cared about and wanted to know better. I read this as an audiobook and enjoyed Elizabeth McGovern as narrator. This was a book I probably never would have found if one of my reading groups hadn't chosen it for listening to for Sept. I'm glad I did.
