This book is well-written and parts of it read like a fable, but I found myself wondering what exactly I was supposed to take from it. Death is a major theme in this book, and at times I was fascinated with the folkloric episodes/aspects in this story of a young doctor retracing her grandfather's last steps. In between a modern narrative in a recently war-torn Balkan country, Obreht has woven different vignettes, the main being the tale of the tiger's wife.
