With little other entertainment, residents of an Afghan village turn out to watch this Scotsman author defecate -- one experience on his walking trek along the old Silk Road through Afghanistan. He reached his goal, despite several harrowing escapes: snow and ice, Kalashnikov-armed patrols and suspicious village headmen. His trip, after all, was in 2002 and warlike activity was about. Yet a spirit of Islamic hospitality prevailed in most villages. He was welcomed and invited to share meager food and accommodations. This is the only trek of his that has so far resulted in a book. His other walking travels were through Pakistan, Iran, India and Nepal. I would look forward to reading about these adventures.
