The Battle for Skandia is book four in the Ranger's Apprentice series by John Flanagan. It's about time this came out! :P I went out on the day it released and bought the freaking hardcover…eek. I really do prefer paperbacks but I couldn't wait for it to release for this series. No way!

Book three left us in the middle of things. Will and Evanlyn were stranded in a cabin, having escaped slavery with the aid of a Skandian, Erak. They must wait out winter and Will needs time to overcome is warmweed addiction. Book four opens with Will and Evanlyn's hope for getting home cut short when Evanlyn is taken by a Temujai warrior. Twists and turns ensue and we end up seeing things set up for an impending war between the Temujai and the Skandians, with Araluen as the end goal for the Temujai. Needless to say this book is ripe with wonderful battle scenes.

This book was a terrific culmination of the previous three books. It pulled everything together and hit us with an intense story filled with an intensity of an impending war, some nice character development, and a dash of humor in all the right spots. I loved every nook and cranny of this story. I find myself a little sad with its end though since I know book five skips two years ahead to let us see Will's first solo ranger mission. And while I do look forward to that, I will miss the training years. I guess I'll just have to reread the four books is all. :)
