Finished re-reading the Lord of the Rings trilogy - first time since the movies came out. I was reminded that despite all the epic battle scenes and good vs. evil plot, what resonated with me was the underlying theme of friendship, loyalty and quiet courage. It is no coincidence that the greatest hero of this series is a pair of the smallest and least physically imposing characters. As much as I enjoyed the movies, they didn't capture this most important of messages.

If you have not read the series, there is much here to enjoy. For the uninitiated, the strange (almost science fiction like) characters, odd names and unintelligible languages may be daunting. Yet, it is an exciting and emotionally satisfying journey if you will allow yourself to follow the path.
