Fairy tales are often rather strange with little or no character development, inconsistent action, and odd jumps in narration. Ms. Lackey tackled a particularly strange fairy tale with Firebird. Unfortunately, she didn't quite pull it off. The pacing is very slow; the entire first half of the book is about the main character trying to avoid being beaten up by his brothers. The action and climax come suddenly for both the main character and the reader. Overall, it was an enjoyable read but it is far from a masterpiece.
