Excellent combination of fantasy, action, humor, Eastern philosophy and just a teensy bit of romance. I adore the main character Charlie Asher, the ultimate Beta male, and the supporting characters are all just flawed or odd enough to be endearing and real, too. And it all comes together perfectly with a surprise at the end, without being the cliche happy ending.
I've read two other books by Christopher Moore: 'The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove' and 'Lamb' -- and this is my favorite. Moore's sense of humor comes through in all of them, but 'A Dirty Job'made me laugh out loud the most. It was also the best balance of entertainment and morality -- 'Lamb' was a little too aggressive on the philosophical agenda, and I'm not sure there was one in 'Lust Lizard'. 'Job' left me feeling like the author would be a really interesting and funny person to hang out with. And it will make finding the next really good book a little more challenging.
