Formulaic romances need something to pull them out of the morass of their counterparts. Either they need to be funny enough that their predictability doesn’t matter, or the characters need to be to be so well-drawn, or speak to us personally enough that we don’t mind hearing the same story for the umpteenth time, or else the plot has to have some unusual twists (but not too many, because then it won’t fall into our “comfort book” category). I’m not sure if this one quite makes it. At first it appeared that the author was making the fatal mistake (at least for me) of poking fun at her protagonists. Frankly, if they’re too silly, I just don’t care any more. But then she started to give them a touch of intelligence as well as the humor and this began to work for me. I can’t say I loved it, but I’m willing to give it some leeway as a first novel, and give her another chance. (And besides, she did a good enough job of setting up her sequel that I just have to see what happens!)
