C. McKenzie It seems that the world has been waiting for just the right boys to arrive and save the world from chaos, and Mahra (a talented and long-lived shape shifter) is there to help. Lots of magic in this story and some excellent, fast-paced scenes. C. M Gray's humor comes through and there are some laugh out loud times, especially as the boys demonstrate their newly acquired talents or meet unique cultures like the Hidden. Mahra also adds to the fun as she sometimes forgets what form she's in and might act cat-like as a human. Very nice touches with her character.

I was a little disappointed that the quest didn't mount in tension--at least for me. After the second skull is discovered, it's on to the third, slowly and without mounting apprehension. I found myself fast forwarding at this point in the story.

On the whole, however, I think it's a good read for young readers.
