Clara Dooley is frustrated at being confined to the mansion where her mother works for old Mrs. Glendoveer. A weak heart makes it necessary for Clara to study at home, to read her days away, and to take it easy, while her mother and the other servant, Ruby, get by on little money. The horrible squawking birds in the big aviary are a peculiar source of concern for the fragile Mrs. Glendoveer, and it isn't until the old lady passes away that Clara figures out the very strange circumstances surrounding the birds. An odd yet intriguing plot propels this ultimately sweet book smoothly along and makes it stand out from other recent juvenile fiction. 4th to 6th grade.
