Months after finishing this novel, I'm still mulling it over. Smith is a brilliant writer, but pieces of this novel felt like mere sketches. Other sections were told with such precision that they felt a bit overdone. Smith gives us London from several different vantage points. The central focus ends up being three friends from school who have all taken various paths in adulthood. Natalie puts up with a lot of prejudice and becomes a lawyer, Leah is scraping by and trying (not really) to get pregnant and Nathan is on the street. No matter their economic status all of them are really screwed up people. In the end, I found it hard to empathize with them and perhaps that made this a difficult read.
