Read from August 23 to 30, 2012

While Something Red certainly has its share of horror and gore, the novel really should be approached more as historical fiction. The author's knowledge of 13th century England is abundantly evident (and in particular the workings of 13th century monasteries, inns and castles), and for those interested in this time period, this novel will be a joy. Those who lose patience with books containing a lot of descriptive detail, though, will find it disappointing. It's definitely not a fast read. The battle scenes do just fly by, but they make up a very small proportion of the book. It reminded me a bit of Stephen King, in that the author really takes his time getting to the heart of the matter. Personally, I loved it and I'm very much looking forward to the rest of what will evidently be a series.
