The story elements of animal realism are all present in DiCamillo’s Because of Winn-Dixie. A young child, a dog and a larger than life imagination mix together in this touching story about having empathy for others, a budding concept for which the age group Because of Winn-Dixie is geared. Many truisms about life and religion are peppered throughout the book, and it is easy to see that DiCamillo is a great observer of people and her characters are bright and powerfully well rounded. The aged, and mentally challenged are also given empathy in DiCamillo’s touching book. I was also pleased to learn that DiCamillo is a “local” author, based in the Twin Cities area.
