really liked it
Read from August 29 to September 10, 2012

I wouldn't normally have chosen to read a book about the Cold War - I'm not really into the topic of espionage etc., but I was attracted by the idea of 'Past meets Present', and I wasn't disappointed. The plot, characters and style of this novel made it compulsive reading and it was a book that I will definitely be recommending . . . The historical detail was well-researched and interesting and the characters were believable and well-developed. The prose was evocative but never élitist. Kennedy's exploration of the concept of 'freedom' manages to be both empathetic and sympathetic without becoming sentimental . . . A great read.
