I actually liked this book a lot up until around the 75% mark when it started to wear me down.

The Colonial Union vs. Conclave plan was so dumb I couldn't get my head around it and the book offered no explanation that made it sit right with me.

The characters were tough to swallow, the protagonist being aloof and jokey for most of the book was fine but when stuff really started to go down I was all "are you a sarcasm robot?" Also had no idea why he was ever with Jane as she was just a cold personality-less bitch in the book. And Zoe spoke like a sassy 25 year old. I'm not sure how old she was supposed to be, but I think maybe a teenager?

Anyway it was enjoyable and I'll likely look around to see what other Scalzi is highly recommended.
