Dead and Gone (Sookie Stackhouse, #9)
by Charlaine Harris
by Charlaine Harris
** spoiler alert **
Hmmm... I felt disappointed with this one. The end was just wrapped up to quickly, and the treatment and tragic end to some characters - SPOILER - Claudine!? why dismiss her death in this way? I was also sad that Tray died.
...so which vampire did Niall mean when he told Sookie that at the very end? my initial thought was that it had to be Eric, because Niall didn't really know Bill.
It seems like CH is starting to formulate an ending here - things are slowly wrapping up. I have a feeling that something major is going to happen with the blood bond between Eric and Sookie - in fact, it may even have been that Eric was in the process of breaking it when Sookie was held hostage and tortured... could that be why he could not come to help her?

I'm bummed about Claudine and Tray too.I at first thought Niall meant Eric as well, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if #10 has Sookie headed back Bill's way. I have thought all along that Eric would end up being a (delicious) diversion from the path towards her true destiny with Bill. (but I'm still rooting for Eric)
Interesting, Lolly ~ I liked this book even more than some of the prior ones. CH gave us a lot to think about, with the culmination of the fairy wars and, in the style of the Harry Potter books, by killing off some of our tried and true heros (think Mad-Eyed Mooney, etc.) I think the deaths are inevitable at this point, since the stakes are so high (pun not intended, but I just cracked myself up).Personally, I dislike vampire Bill so much that I can only cross my fingers and hope that he makes the ultimate sacrifice for Sookie at some point. That is the only way he'll ever be redeemed in my mind. His initial betrayl of Sookie is unforgivable in my mind, regardless of whether he loves her now. Every time he appears, he grates on my nerves.
I am interested to see where the blood bond between Sookie and Eric goes. I adore that part of Sookie and Eric's relationship and I hope that we have more progression of it rather than disolution. I am sure that there IS something going on behind the scenes with Eric, though, especially with Sookie able to read his mind at times. I wonder if CH will take steps to make Eric human again or some such? I can't wait until the next book comes out!
Thanks for the comment, Katie! Funny you should write this this morning, as I picked this book up last night to re-read a few passages (ummm, guess which ones? heh) and to remind myself about the blood bond stuff. I think you are really on to something there - Eric is doing something behind the scenes, and I am nearly convinced that he is finding a way to break the blood bond (draining himself slowly?) to prove to Sookie that it is true love... it really broke him up towards the end when Sookie was questioning where he was when she was being tortured by the evil fairies. I am not ready to write off Bill entirely - I think he can be redeemed, but I don't think Sookie will be with him again. And that is fine by me.
As more things happen, I really do think it is going to be between Eric and Sam.
I just assumed that - like when Sigebert was attacking Eric - he could feel Sookie's pain, and as it was so great he could have been incapacitated too. Interesting theory about the blood bond, but he fed her SO often in this book. I think that if he had been worried about her having too much of his blood, he would've found another vamp (or several) to feed her instead.

I initially thought I liked the book a lot and then gave it some more thought and it felt really rushed to me. I also hated the way Claudine's death was handled and I was terribly sad about Tray.
I know I'm in the minority but I thought Niall was talking about Bill 1. because he made the comment about him not being a bad guy and Sookie had been angry at Bill (justifiably so) and really didn't think of Eric as bad. 2. It really seems to me like CH is amping up the love triangle again - she even mentioned that Sookie thought about Bill during the fight and remembered when she was first with him and loved him again. Finally, Niall and Bill traveled together to Arkansas to save Sookie from the fairies so they spent some time together then and also Niall has been watching Sookie from afar for long before she knew him so I assume he knew all about Bill.
I agree that something is going on with Eric and I've seen a lot of mention that the blood bond was broken... I'm just not sure because CH mentioned a surge of anger when the final fight began and Sookie attributed it to the blood bond and Pam's weird comment about Eric living on in Sookie - not sure what to make of it but clearly he was doing something very important and mysterious or else he would have saved her.
One last thing... I really didn't like Eric's possessiveness in this book. I know that's his personality but I was really tired of all the mine, mine, mine. Although I think that may change in the next book. Now I just have to sit tight until June 14 so I can get my True Blood fix. :)
