Somehow, I missed the first book so I was coming in without the history but I still loved the story--and of course I love Shannon Hale--she's a wonderful author. This is the story of Miri, a poor mountain girl, who leaves home to go to the big city as one of the Palace Ladies to support Britta, a friend who is going to be the next princess. When Miri reaches the city, revolution is afoot. One of the threads woven through this story is language and ethics and the power of words--really loved that part of it, as well as Miri's struggles to understand where she belongs--in the mountains or the city--or maybe in both? Now I'll have to go back and read book 1...
