When a child protagonist in realistic fiction has a generally happy family life, it's tough to create suspense. As Katherine Paterson has rightly observed, the job of parents is to stop suspenseful events from happening to their kids. My One Hundred Adventures is a great story with realistic stakes that still feel very high for the protagonist. She really *wants* to figure out her place in the world. And she does, in an ending that's warm and satisfying.
