Re-reading these essays after the recent death of their author brought an added poignancy to the writing. The last essay, "I used to bank here, but that was long, long ago" deals with him revisiting the hospital where he'd had chemo at age 22 as a 35-year old man. This passage struck me especially.

"What remains of your past if you didn't allow yourself to feel it when it happened? If you don't have the experiences in the moment, if you gloss them over with jokes or zoom past them, you end up with curiously dispassionate memories."

An important reminder from a man whose life was too brief.
