As with any Indian novel or movie, Shantaram is epic at times, fraught with suffering and laced with lessons, but always there is hope, which I find endlessly fascinating. The writing grabbed me from the first page, and I was immediately intrigued by the main character (a fictionalized version of the author): a philosopher, intellectual, criminal, fugitive, addict but also a terribly generous and kind person. This is the first Indian novel I've read that was not written by an Indian--an interesting, new perspective.
