A pleasant read with memorable, funny characters, and genuinely tearful moments, though the story, the situations, and the conflicts will be pretty familiar to readers of all ages.

But the fact is we need more middle grade novels that tell stories of children facing abusive situations or living in foster care, because many of the classics such as Pinballs and The Great Gilly Hopkins are beloved by older readers, but may seem a little dated to younger ones so I'm glad that we have this book.

On a personal note, I agree with Carley one hundred percent on the topic of the The Giving Tree and I agree with Toni one hundred percent regarding the Yankees ("Don't you love a team that goes eighty-six years without winning a Series, and when they do, they act like they own baseball?" -- if there could be an award for best Red Sox insult in children's literature, this would be the winner!). :)
