it was amazing

In many ways this is fairly lightweight story wise for Iain Banks! Of course that doesn't mean it has no violence or tragedy, there is still oodles of it, but it's perhaps less shocking or heart wrenching than some of his previous similar tales (this is in the vein of The Crow Road, Espedair Street and The Steep Approach to Garbadale). I got the feeling that if Ian McEwan had written this same story I would have hated it, but as usual Banks had me enchanted with his characters, landscapes and nostalgia. As usual his writing fairly falls off the page it's so easy to read. An absolute pleasure and a book I devoured quickly and happily. More please Iain Banks, I'll never tire of these novels!
