This prequel to Revolution sets up a lot of great character development, and also explains some of the tension in Revolution.

It's Christmas, and Daniel has accompanied his family and the Vampire royalty to a secluded location for a secret summit. But Daniel isn't thinking about politics: his mind is on the princess. Cassie has always been his best friend, but lately, Daniel has been wondering if they could ever be more. The political tension takes a backseat to hormones, but this book is still fraught with many levels of "what ifs". Less action/killing than Revolution, and more focused on the characters: I'd read this before reading the rest of the series. All in all, I loved the chance to understand the world better, and to see where Daniel and Cassie crossed the line from friends to soul mates.
