I tried to like this. It won the Pulitzer for gosh sakes. At first I entered into the world of Dominican surreal fantasy—and then it took some turns that simply lost me. I couldn’t figure out where it was going, until I realized that was the point. It is a very long monologue. The language is vibrant and sometimes thrilling. There are moments of great joy, profound sadness—and ebullient prose. Diaz is an exciting writer. My lack of praise shouldn’t stop anyone from reading this book.
