This was a better concept than it was in reality, if only because the central concept was a stepping stone rather than a focus. That's not to insult the story; it actually carried itself well, and the last 60 pages or so were impressively imaginative. And knowing that it's part one in a series makes me think that the rest of the trilogy may dig deeper into the world's magic. But the concept of pulling items from books almost felt like it got a little short shrift; there's a lot more to the concept than the book explored. But I am looking forward to seeing where Mr. Hines takes the story from here, and I think I need to track down his other trilogy.
