Like Hemmingway, I was turned on to Fitzgerald through his short stories. Although I'm not a 1920s Ivy League fratboy, it's difficult not to relate to the struggles of each of his characters. The stories can seem a bit redundant when read back to back, but reading all of them is an excellent exercise in understanding the pulse of the egalitarian culture of the early twentieth century.
