really liked it
bookshelves: crime
Read in July, 2012

Generally a very engaging and interesting debut in the crime genre. The hero is engaging and refreshingly human, and flawed. Not in the "look how dark and tortured I am" kind of way but in the "scared of flying, bit insecure, eats too much, crap at relationships" kind of way. He is a recognisable person, an everyman.
The genealogical aspect is original, and allows the novel to be both a murder mystery and a historical romance; if I have any criticism it's that some of the passages set in the past are heavy handed and a little contrived, the ear for dialogue of the period good but not perfect. However these ar churlish criticisms of what is a very good read. I look forward to the next book.
