While I enjoyed the first book by this author, In the Blood, it did have flaws. It was well written and the hero Tayte is fresh and engaging, the genealogical angle original, but there were moments that were clumsy, and some heavy handedness in the historical plot.
This sequel is a major step forward and one of the most enjoyable reads this year. The historical sections are handled with confidence, accuracy and poignancy. The characters both past and present are well drawn, interesting and true to life. The mystery and murder element is deftly introduced.
In particular Jefferson Tayte emerges from the page as an everyman - well meaning, decent, no superhero but no coward either, insecure and sad in his own way. I look forward to seeing what happens next.
