Rich in descriptive language and character development. Complex and disturbing with layers of nuance. Really places you at the time and place of the novel and gives a great perspective through the eyes of a child.

While I loved the detail I also felt it was too long. About three fourths of the way through I almost put it down but felt like after 600 pages I was too invested not to finish. It picked back up, drew me back in before the ending. The second part of the book resolved the book but it felt a bit less developed than the first part. Madeleine as an adult was not quite as compelling.
