This novel is set against the background of its predecessor, Farthing, in an England that made a treaty with Hitler after Dunkirk instead of fighting World War II. Its central characters are the actress Viola Lark, from a family clearly modeled on that of the celebrated Mitford sisters, and Carmichael of Scotland Yard, who is investigating a bomb explosion in London, as case that leads to a plot to assassinate Hitler and the British Prime Minister. Deceptively quiet and understated in the beginning, but builds to a powerful and relevant conclusion.
