really liked it
bookshelves: her-voice, fiction-and-um-stuff

This is one of those rare books about the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) that made me wistful, sad, smile... all at the same time. It's a romance, plain and simple, but it's done against the backdrop of a China in turmoil, but the best part? The best part is that it's so placid. The ups and downs are almost exclusively devoted to the romance between Lin, Manna, and Shuyu. It pulls across the spectrum of love and there's a question of whether the person you're in love with at twenty will be the same person you love at forty.

Though, to be honest, I kind of wanted to kick Lin in the balls.
