Wow, just wow. It starts slow and you wonder why these people matter, and by the end of Part 2 you're railing against the unfairness of life and the Holocaust because the author was killed and now you'll never know what happened to everyone. (Well, you get some idea for 3 or 4 characters because of some appended notes.) So much lost to hate.

The book offers an incredible, frank portrayal of the French at the start of the war. (Nemirovsky was killed in 1942.) It can be uncomfortable at times, but it's nothing short of amazing.
