this is a decent book and ought to have been a good, quick read, if i still had my reading druthers about me. it reminded me why i love nonfic so much; and i apologize to everyone to whom i gave random facts about oranges to at inappropriate moments. it really is fascinating. mcphee has a way of escaping the dry, journalistic trap by really creating characters and delving into the history of a topic, be it oranges, or the topics of any of his many other books.

Dana Nana, so bizarre. My parents were here over the holidays and my dad was reading a collection of McPhee's. By way of explaining what his style is like he had me read a bit of Oranges.

Nana what did you think of it, dana? there's one passage i especially enjoyed--a very long bit of detail about the history, particularly how the orange got its name--i thought it was brilliant!
