Riveting. I did not realize that M. Kschessinska was truly a famous Russian ballerina and mistress of the tzar. Although the book is fiction, it does a wonderful job giving insight into Russian culture and the history of Russia between the late 1800's to after WWI-Rasputin, how the Russians viewed Alix, the Russo-Japanese war, the revolutions/Lenin, Alexei's illness, the ballet, even Faberge. I found this book useful for students.
The writing can seem long because it is very descriptive but I found myself thinking-was this how the tzar really felt?, etc. It gave a different spin on the story of the Romanov family.
Highly recommend.
