This series began with a shaky start for me, particularly as someone whose history degree emphasis was on WWI. It was a little difficult to let go of some concepts/historical figures while still keeping others. But as I went on, I absolutely fell in love with Westerfeld's alternate world. The plot twists felt less like mechanisms of the author and more like "this is the way life gets convoluted". I loved that there were suspicions of spies and lack of trust, but ultimately it didn't matter - the characters just did what needed to be done, hang the rest of the world.

Deryn and Alek both came into their own in this book. While I've always been more partial to Deryn (and she really *is* the bell captain!), this was the first time when I really felt at peace with Alek.

It was a fantastic culmination to the series, and the last article by Eddie Malone couldn't have ended more perfectly. :) I'm just terribly sad that it's over....
