On the whole, this isn't Dostoyevsky's strongest work... while it's brilliant at times, Dostoyevsky hews too closely to this Gogolian model of how-an-absurd-story-should-be. Makes sense, it is one of his early works, written 20 years before his masterpieces.

I mean, the central premise was good enough to sustain my interest. And the protagonist was enough of a sniveling little bitch that I could laugh at him. And the prose was hallucinatory enough to make me wonder what Dostoyevsky was going to do next. But it wasn't the man's finest work.
