Wow--this is not a "light read"! For a fairly short book it is very heavy. It is the story of a family told in three parts from 3 people's perspectives: Ed Lawson, the father's part is told via his friend; the mother Josephine's part is told through her journal; and daughter Althea tells her own part with some clarity and some streams of consciousness. The author does a very good job of portraying the deep sadness, desperation and disconnect between the characters...and the painful and tragic life they had together.
