I received a complimentary copy of this book through Goodreads First Reads.
I had a hard time getting into this book, because I'm not up on New York geography and knowing what living in a specific neighborhood says about someone. The characters made me stick with it; they're intriguing, though often unlikeable. It's one of those reads where you're frustrated by the amount of stupidity the characters engage in. And at the end, they felt like actors playing the roles of characters - manipulated by the author rather than growing organically.
The ending seemed rushed - after wallowing in the emotional life of a complicated cast of characters, everything pretty much worked out okay through a series of almost deus ex machina moments.
I would have given it a 2 1/2, so I rounded it up to 3.
