Edith Wharton is one of my favorite writers. I'm not a fan of romance novels, and this book was a weaving of true biographical details and a passionate love affair between an aging writer in an unhappy marriage, and a rogue of the worst kind. The subplot of her secretary/companion, Anna's romantic leanings was in many ways more interesting, without the (what I felt was) gratuitous sex scenes. At the end of the book, which was a compelling read, in many ways, I felt like Edith had been ill used and exploited on some level. I was somewhat offended, on her behalf.

The author has certainly done her homework, with many of the events and relationships of Edith's life depicted accurately.
