Read from August 13 to October 07, 2012

No Justice, by Darcia Helle, is an edge-of-your-seat crime story. As Helle tends to do so adeptly, she weaves the story around powerful characters that feel exceptionally true to life. The protagonist, Michael Sykora, is effectively a vigilante for hire, readily embraced by the reader for only taking on jobs where justice has not been appropriately served. In this story, a woman from Michael’s past, Nicki, comes to him for help protecting her from Antonio Lott, an underworld figure who is convinced that Nicki possesses information that could be harmful to him and his organization. Helle brings the characters to life, both the good guys and bad guys, and throws in a few colorful peripheral characters as well. The sexual tension between Michael and Nicki provides breaks from the seedy goings-on and gives the story a nice balance. I look forward to seeing where Michael and Nicki head in Helle’s sequel.
